Baby massage is one of the most calming and heartfelt experiences of motherhood. But let me be honest. In the beginning, it looks scary. Your baby feels tiny, fragile, and you’re constantly worried about doing something wrong.

I felt the same.

Those first few weeks, the idea of massaging my baby felt overwhelming.

How much pressure is okay?

What if he cries?

What if I hurt him?

But once you get the hang of it, baby massage becomes everything. Those few minutes are enough to pause, breathe, and truly relish the little human you have created.

It feels like moulding, shaping, loving, and nurturing your baby with your own hands 🤍

Baby Massage Is Not About Pressure

Traditionally, massage is often associated with tight, hard pressure. But not with babies.

Baby massage is about light touch, warmth, and love.

Always massage with:

  • Soft hands

  • Gentle strokes

  • A calm heart

Pour extra love and warmth into every move. Your baby feels your energy more than your technique.

My Experience as a New Mom

Initially, I was scared. So we kept a massage aunty who helped with my baby’s massage and bathing for the first two months. During this time, I quietly observed her every move. She didn’t just massage the baby, she encouraged me to learn.

Slowly, I picked up tips and tricks from her. She motivated me and made me realise that no one knows your baby better than you. That’s when I gathered the courage to start.

And once I did, there was no going back.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Massage

A few simple things make all the difference:

  • The room should be warm and closed, no cold air

  • Warm your hands before touching the baby

  • Slightly warm the oil so it feels soothing

  • Choose a calm time when the baby is relaxed

We used cold-pressed extra virgin coconut oil. It’s gentle, nourishing, and perfect for newborn skin.

Note: These things may also vary depending on the weather conditions. Every home environment is different, and a mother understands her baby’s comfort the best. Trust your instincts and adjust the room temperature or oil warmth accordingly.

Why Baby Massage Is So Important

Massage is not just about relaxation. It helps you understand your baby better.

While massaging, you:

  • Learn your baby’s likes and dislikes

  • Notice any marks, rashes, or discomfort early

  • Understand where the baby feels sensitive

  • Build confidence in handling your baby

That daily touch builds a bond that words can’t explain.💛

How I Massage My Baby: Step-by-Step 🤍

I’ll also be uploading a video to show the massage clearly, but here’s how I do it in simple steps:

Step 1: Start with the Legs

Begin by taking off the baby’s bottoms. If it’s cold, you can let the baby wear the upper top.

Massage the legs gently using slow strokes.

Step 2: Head Massage

Next, gently massage the head with very light pressure. Soft circular motions are enough. Babies usually enjoy this part a lot.

Step 3: Upper Body

Now remove the upper clothing and gently massage the chest, tummy, and arms. Keep the strokes soft and slow.

Step 4: Back Massage

Turn the baby gently onto the tummy and massage the back with long, gentle strokes. Avoid pressing the spine.

Step 5: A Few Gentle Exercises

After massage, I usually do a few light movements with the baby’s legs and hands. Nothing fancy, just gentle stretches.

Bath Time After Massage 🛁

Once the massage is done, wait for 5–10 minutes. During this time, get the water ready.

Make sure the water is lukewarm, not hot. Then proceed with bathing. Massage followed by a bath relaxes the baby deeply and usually leads to better sleep.

A Gentle Note for New Moms 🤍

If you’re scared, it’s okay. If you want to take time, that’s okay too.

Start slow. Observe. Learn. Trust yourself.

Baby massage is not a task. It’s a moment. A beautiful pause in your day where it’s just you and your baby, connecting through touch and love.

And once you start, you’ll realise how powerful those few minutes truly are 💛

Love,

Rashi
