There’s something so comforting about the remedies our nanis used, no fancy bottles, no side effects, just love, warmth, and a bit of kitchen magic. One of those treasures in our family is Ajwain Hing Sek. My nani used to make it for my mom when she had a cold, and now I find myself doing the same for Rudransh. It’s amazing how something so simple can bring so much relief. No antibiotics, no vapor rubs, just this humble little potli doing its quiet magic while the baby sleeps peacefully nearby.
💛 Why Ajwain Hing Sek Is a Lifesaver for Little Ones
Ajwain (carom seeds) and hing (asafoetida) are both powerhouses when it comes to fighting colds. They’re known for their antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. When dry roasted and wrapped in a soft cloth, they release a warm, soothing aroma that:
Clears blocked noses
Loosens chest congestion
Helps babies breathe and sleep better
Reduces the need for medicines or vapor patches
And the best part? It’s safe for newborns, gentle on toddlers, and made with ingredients already in your kitchen.
👶 How to Use It for Babies & Toddlers
For newborns: Just place the potli near where the baby sleeps, on the side of the crib or under the pillow (but never too close). The aroma alone helps clear nasal passages.
For toddlers: You can gently ask them to sniff the potli now and then. It really helps soothe their stuffy nose.
For both: A light sek (warm compress) on the chest and soles of the feet works wonders before bedtime.
Just remember- always check the temperature before using it. It should be warm, never hot.
🧵 How to Make the Ajwain Hing Potli
You’ll Need:
2 tablespoons ajwain
A pinch of hing
A small piece of muslin cloth or any soft cotton cloth

The only things you need!
Steps:
Dry roast the ajwain and hing on a tawa over low flame until you get that strong, comforting aroma. Don’t burn it, just warm and toasty.

Dry roast together on a tawa for 60-90 seconds approx. Transfer the mix to the center of your cloth.

Transfer it on a clean muslin cloth Tie it up into a tight potli (little pouch), making sure nothing spills out.

Tie it and your potli is ready!
That’s it! Your nani-approved remedy is ready.
🛏️ How to Use the Potli
Place it near the baby’s head while they sleep (but out of reach).
For toddlers, let them inhale the aroma gently a few times a day.
You can also give a gentle sek on the chest and feet, especially helpful before naps or bedtime.
The potli cools down quickly, so if you’re giving a sek, keep a warm iron nearby. Just place the potli near the iron (not on it!) to reheat slightly.
Always test the warmth on your wrist before using it on your child.
⚠️ A Few Safety Tips
Never apply a hot potli directly to the baby’s skin.
Always supervise when using it around babies and toddlers.
Use fresh ajwain and hing for best results.
Replace the potli every few days if using regularly.
This little potli has been a quiet hero in our home—bringing relief, comfort, and a bit of nani’s love into our everyday routine. It’s easy, effective, and made with nothing but care and kitchen staples.
I hope this helps your little one too and keeps them healthy and hearty! ❤️
