The moment babies start solids, constipation becomes one of the most common concerns for new moms. Suddenly the diaper looks different, poop frequency changes, and we start wondering if we’ve done something wrong.

Let me reassure you first. Constipation during the initial solids phase is very common.

Your baby’s digestive system is adjusting from liquid-only feeds to thicker textures. This transition takes time.

The key is simple: Right foods, enough water, and patience.

Foods That Help Relieve Constipation

1. Papaya

Papaya is one of the best fruits for digestion.

  • Rich in fiber

  • Contains natural enzymes that help break down food

  • Soft texture makes it easy to mash

Offer ripe papaya, mashed well. It helps soften stools naturally.

2. Soaked Prune Water

Prunes are well known for relieving constipation.

  • High in natural fiber

  • Contains sorbitol, which helps bowel movement

Soak 1–2 prunes overnight, strain the water, and give 1–2 teaspoons only. This works gently without being harsh.

3. Dragon Fruit

This fruit is mild, cooling, and very gentle on the stomach.

  • High water content

  • Good amount of fiber

  • Helps hydrate the gut

Mash it well and give in small quantities. Great for babies who get hard stools.

4. Dalia (Broken Wheat) 🌾

Dalia is filling and digestion-friendly when cooked properly.

  • Rich in dietary fiber

  • Helps add bulk to stools

  • Keeps baby fuller for longer

Cook it very soft and mash it well before offering.

  1. Steamed Pumpkin 🎃

Steamed pumpkin is gentle, soothing, and works really well for constipation.

  • High in fiber and water

  • Soft texture makes it easy to digest

  • Helps add bulk to stools without irritating the gut

Steam pumpkin until very soft, mash it well, and offer in small quantities.

6. Chikoo (Sapota)

Chikoo is gentle and nourishing.

  • Contains fiber

  • Helps ease bowel movement when given ripe

Always offer well-ripened chikoo, mashed smoothly.

7. Steamed & Mashed Pear 🍐

Pear is one of the safest fruits for constipation.

  • High in fiber and water

  • Helps soften stools

Steam it, mash well, and serve warm or room temperature.

8. Ajwain Water 🌿

This is an old, trusted remedy.

  • Helps reduce gas

  • Improves digestion

Boil a pinch of ajwain in water. Let it cool completely. Give 1–2 teaspoons only. Works well for tummy discomfort along with constipation

Foods to Avoid When Baby Is Constipated 🚫

These foods are not bad forever but can make constipation worse during this phase.

  • Raw or semi-ripe banana  – Binding and can harden stools

  • Rice and rice-based foods  – Can slow bowel movement

  • Raw apple  – Always steam before offering

  • Excess dairy – Can cause hard stools if overused

  • Suji  – Heavy if given frequently

  • Packaged baby foods – Often low in fiber

Once digestion improves, these foods can slowly be reintroduced in moderation.

Why Water Is Very Important After Starting Solids 💧

This is something many new moms miss.

Before solids, milk is enough. But once solids start, water becomes essential for digestion. Solids without water often lead to hard stools.

Water helps:

  • Soften stools

  • Move food smoothly through the gut

  • Prevent painful bowel movements

Offer small sips of water after meals using a steel sipper or open cup. Don’t force it. Even a few spoons after meals help a lot.

Milk still remains the primary nutrition till one year, but water supports digestion once solids are introduced.

A Few Gentle Reminders for Moms 🤍

  • Introduce foods slowly

  • Start with small quantities

  • Balance solids with enough milk + water

  • Observe your baby, not just the diaper

If your baby is active, feeding well, and comfortable, things usually settle on their own.

When to Call the Pediatrician 🚨

  • Very hard stools for many days

  • Blood in poop

  • Baby seems uncomfortable or cries while passing stools

From One Mom to Another 💛

Constipation during the solids phase doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It’s just a part of growing up. With the right food choices, hydration, and patience, your baby’s tummy learns and adapts.

Take it slow, trust yourself, and remember you’re doing great 🤍

Love,

Rashi
