When you start expressing milk, one of the biggest questions is always the same. How long can I store breastmilk and how do I do it safely?

I remember being confused too. So, here’s a simple, no-panic guide that worked for me and can help you feel confident while storing breastmilk.

Storing Breastmilk in the Fridge (For Same Day Use) 🧊

If you plan to use expressed milk within the same day, the refrigerator works perfectly.

How to Store?

  • Use breastmilk storage bags or clean, sterilized glass bottles

  • Pour the expressed milk immediately into the container

  • Write the date and time of expression on the bag or bottle

  • Store it on the shelf of the fridge in a corner, not the door

How Long It Stays Fresh?

  • Breastmilk can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours

Storing Breastmilk in the Freezer (For 2–3 Months) ❄️🍼

If you want to store breastmilk for longer, freezing is the best option.

How to Store?

  • Use breastmilk storage bags made for freezing

  • Pour milk in small quantities (60–120 ml)

  • Leave some space in the bag as milk expands when frozen

  • Seal tightly and label with date and time

  • Place bags flat in the freezer for easy stacking

How Long It Can Be Stored?

  • Breastmilk can be stored in the freezer for up to 2–3 months

Thawing Frozen Breastmilk

  • Shift frozen milk to the fridge overnight OR

  • Hold the bag under lukewarm running water

  • Gently swirl to mix the fat (do not shake)

What NOT to Do

  • Do not boil or microwave breastmilk

  • Do not refreeze thawed milk

  • Do not heat directly on flame

Once thawed, use the milk within 24 hours if kept in the fridge or within 1 hour if kept at room temperature.

A Few Things to Remember

  • Breastmilk may smell slightly soapy after freezing. This is normal

  • Always trust your instincts. If milk smells sour, discard it

  • Clean hands and clean containers are key

A Little Reassurance for New Moms đź’›

Expressing and storing breastmilk feels overwhelming at first but it becomes second nature with time. Once you get the hang of it, it gives you so much freedom and confidence, especially when you are working or stepping out.

You’re doing great mama 🫶

One step at a time 🍼✨
