Yes, yes we loved kids. But the crying, the screaming, the high-pitched tantrums mid-air? Let’s just say it wasn’t the ambience we wished for at 35,000 ft. And let’s be honest, the entire flight looks at those poor parents with the same expression: “Why did you bring the baby?” (As if we smuggled the child onboard for fun)
So, we made a pact. When we become parents and fly with our little one, we would do EVERYTHING humanly possible to keep him comfortable and keep the plane peaceful.
Now that I’ve taken 10+ flights with Rudransh, here’s what truly worked for us.
1. Don’t Disturb the Baby’s Schedule (If You Can Help It)
I know… easier said than done. But, if possible, pick a flight time that doesn’t destroy your baby’s sleep or feeding rhythm.
Babies don’t handle a messed-up schedule well. We adults fake politeness while dying inside. Babies don’t and they express. Loudly.
2. Hydrate Like It’s a Mission
Flights have low humidity which can dry out adults so imagine a tiny baby!
Keep them well-hydrated before and during the journey. Also: fresh diaper at least 30 minutes before boarding = maximum comfort, minimum drama.
3. Layer Up — Flights Are Basically Refrigerators
Airports and planes are cold.
Cold baby = uncomfortable baby = stressed baby hormones = meltdown.
Layer them well so they stay warm and cozy throughout the journey.
4. Cover Those Ears (This One Is Magic!)
Most fussiness in babies during flights happens because of air pressure changes and that hits the ears first.
Use cotton balls or baby earmuffs/headphones. It reduces pressure discomfort AND cuts down on noise. A calmer baby = a happier flight.

5. Feed During Takeoff & Landing
This is the golden rule. Breastfeed, bottle-feed, or give a pacifier — anything that encourages sucking.
That sucking motion helps equalize ear pressure, and babies stay blissfully unaware. No tears, no discomfort, and a much smoother experience for everyone.
6. Carry Something Familiar
A favorite toy, blanket, or rattle or something that smells and feels like “home.”
Babies need emotional anchors in unfamiliar places. A familiar object calms their minds instantly.

7. Keep a New Toy as a Surprise Weapon
Distraction is your best friend. A new toy they’ve never seen before becomes a magical 30–45 minutes of quiet engagement.
Pull this out once the flight settles. Works every time.
8. And Lastly… Be Shamelessly 'Besharam'
Even after doing EVERYTHING right…Even after preparing like you’re writing an IAS exam…Babies sometimes just cry.
And that’s okay.
Don’t kill yourself thinking about what others will say.
Don’t apologize 200 times.
Don’t feel guilty.
We’ve ALL been that parent.
And honestly? The ones judging you were probably babies once too and I’m sure they weren’t exactly silent monks' mid-flight.
From One Travel Mom to Another
I’ve taken more than 10 flights with Rudransh now. This routine worked like a charm 90% of the time.
The other 10%?
Well… let’s just say God has a sense of humor and occasionally sends reminders of the karma we earned from complaining about other people’s kids earlier 😂
Love,
Rashi
