How I Trained My Baby’s Sleep Cycle 🌙

Making a baby sleep should honestly qualify as an Olympic sport. And not the easy kind. I’m talking the “why does this tiny human hate nighttime?” category. Because let’s face it: most babies (read: all of them) behave like they’re born to be night owls. Party all night, nap all day — and there goes our entire schedule for a toss.

But here’s the million-dollar question every new mom Googles at 3 AM: How do we make them follow our sleep cycle?

Now, my sample size is basically me, my son, and a handful of equally sleep-deprived mom friends but what worked for us might just work for you too.

The Ritual We Started from Day 1 🕰️

Nothing fancy. No expensive gadgets. No white noise machines that sound like a spaceship.

Just light. Or rather, no light.

Every single time my baby looked even remotely sleepy, we switched off all the lights. Natural, artificial, tube light, fairy lights. Everything. Only one tiny night bulb for dignity.

And the second he woke up? We gently lit up the room again. Think soft natural light, or a warm lamp, and then slowly brightening it into a well-lit space.

How It Works? 🧠

Do this consistently for 2–3 weeks, and something amazing happens —their little brains start to treat darkness = sleep and light = wakey time.

Once the association builds, life gets easier. Like “I-got-an-extra-27-minutes-of-sleep” easier, which, for a new mom, feels like striking gold.

Turn off the lights → baby gets sleepy. Turn them on → baby wakes up like someone pressed a magic button.

But Don’t Forget the Basics 💤

This trick works beautifully only when your little one is comfortable. So, remember to:

  • Feed them

  • Burp them

  • Check that nappy

And the golden rule every mom hates but secretly knows is true: Sleep when the baby sleeps.

(I know, I know, but trust me, even a 10-minute nap counts.)

A Tiny Ritual That Makes a Big Difference

This little sleep-light routine made my early motherhood days soooo much smoother. And I genuinely hope it helps you too. Anything that gives a new mom a few extra moments of rest? Absolute blessing.

Hang in there, mama. You’re doing great even if your under-eye circles say otherwise 😉 Love, Rashi
